Wow, thank you again Microsoft for another wonderful patch that breaks our operating systems. Thank god no one has run into this problem yet at work, cause I can only imagine the hell that would ensue if we performed Windows Updates on someones machine and then it died because of this patch. Since the above Digg takes you to a Cnet article and not the KB, I figured I should share that here as well. The article is 909444 and includes methods of fixing this problem as well as a list of the symptoms you can expect if you have this issue. Just for a run down, some of the best symptoms include:

  • Windows Installer Service may not start.
  • Windows Firewall Service may not start.
  • The Network Connections folder is empty.
  • COM+ applications will not start.
  • Authenticated users cannot log on, and a blank screen appears after the users apply the October Security Updates.

And Microsoft wonders why people don’t perform their updates more frequently. You wanna know why Bill? BECAUSE THEY BREAK THINGS! Seems pretty obvious to me, Mr. Computer Tech, so why don’t those highly paid software engineers over at Microsoft see this?
