So we have all heard the news by now of Sony’s Evil DRM Root-Kit and all the evil things it can do to your system. Hell, WoW cheaters having been using it to hide their cheats from Blizzard’s anti-cheat system. Well, I am happy to say folks that help has arrived. Computer Associates has added Sony’s Root-Kit to their definitions for their PestPatrol product! Here is one of the best parts of the post from CA:
UPDATE: Computer Associates has received the uninstaller link from First4Internet, writing on behalf of Sony BGM. It is an ActiveX control. Initial analysis shows the uninstaller verifying that it is on the same system which ran the initial ActiveX control as part of the uninstaller request process. This effectively prevents easy redistribution of the uninstaller, and requires everyone who wishes to receive the uninstaller to do so through Sony BMG’s official process, which involves releasing personally identifiable information for use by Sony BMG and undisclosed third parties.
Wow, Sony is just a gem… you have to give up all your personal information just to get a f’ing uninstall utility. I would love to see where in the EULA this is stated. Not to mention the fact that we actually have a major news outlet covering the R00t-Kit, which is great and all, but it would be amazing if they could actually get all the facts correct. But, it is the media, so what can you expect (after all I have read all of Mark’s Sysinternal posts and he was pretty mis-quoted a couple of times).
So thank you CA for being one of the first to step up and help protect your customers from this type of insidious crap that the enterainment industry feels their customers must endure. Till the next chapter in the story, I’m going to go listen to some Cracknation bands in MP3 format in iTunes that I ripped legally from my 300+ non-DRMed CD collection! Get the hint Sony…
