The Worthless ISP

So I have a customer that runs their own mail server (postfix, courier setup) and they have just recently been getting nailed by this new Sober variant. All of these emails are coming from from some podunk little ISP in Pittsburgh. The name of the ISP is City-Net, and I can officially say they are probably the biggest bunch of idiots ever. I sent them two emails today, both to abuse and postmaster (since their is no auto-responder that even tells me they recieved the emails) and so far the emails haven’t stopped from this user.

Now, being for the most part this customer gets very little spam and that I don’t like to “play god” with people’s emails I’ve tried to be very lax with setting up filters and whatnot on the machine. But finally I caved and added Spamcop and CBL as blacklists to postfix. Since the abuser is on the CBL blacklist this should cut down on the complaints I hear over the next couple days.

This leads me to think that I might just want to bite the bullet and put spamassassin and clamav on the server. Of course if ISPs did a better job of policing their networks we wouldn’t have this issue. But thank you City-Net for providing me a couple more hours of billable time this week. My wallet appreciates it!
