Virtual Happiness
So for those that have been living under a rock, Microsoft released their Virtual Server 2005 R2 for free to anyone who wants it. Since Virtual Server has one item up on VMware’s free Server product, it will run on XP, I had to download and install it. Downloaded both version (x86 and x64) and setup the x64 version on my desktop.
So what was the first thing I tried doing? Well install Gentoo in a VM of course. Things seem ok, except for some network wierdness when attempting to download files during the install. I get full speed for about 30 seconds or so, and then the network just stops working for 5 minutes or so. Repeat. Not sure what the issue is, I was using the minimal install disc, so I’m thinking I might try the LiveCD version later this week to see if that clears up the issue.
Since that failed miserably, I just decided to load up XP in a VM for fun. Its pretty sad when your VM runs faster than most of the PCs of the customers that you visit on a daily basis. Figure it’s basically a Pentium 3GHz w/512 of RAM dedicated to the VM (gotta love Dual Core PCs). And then with Alcohol 120% and the virtual drives, I can mount any disc I want and the VM picks it up instantly… gotta love it.
Hopefully I’ll get the network issue with the Gentoo install corrected and we’ll be able to get a Linux distro running on my Windows.
